The Classification of Metal Stamping Process

Stamping is a forming process that relies on presses and dies to apply external force to plates, strips, pipes and profiles to produce plastic deformation or separation to obtain workpieces of the required shape and size. According to different process conditions, stamping process has different classification methods. Let’s briefly introduce what are the types of metal stamping process at the following.

1.According to the finished workpiece to divide:

The stamping process can be roughly divided into two categories according to the finished workpiece: separation process and forming process (also divided into bending, drawing and forming).

2.According to the temperature of stamping to divide:

There are two types of stamping, cold stamping and hot stamping, according to the temperature situation at the time of stamping. This depends on the strength, plasticity, thickness, degree of deformation and equipment capacity of the material, etc. The original heat treatment state of the material and the final use conditions should also be considered.

3. Classification according to the structure of the punching die:

The punching die is a tool to produce separation or deformation of the sheet material, which consists of two parts: the upper die and the lower die. The upper die is fixed to the slide of the punching machine and moves up and down with the slide, while the lower die is fixed to the table of the punching machine. It is an essential die for stamping production. According to the structure of the die, the process can be divided into simple stamping, continuous stamping and compound stamping.

4. Classification according to basic processes:

According to the basic process stamping is divided into several basic processes such as drop, punching, bending and deep drawing.

5. Classification according to the material of stamping workpiece:

The commonly used plates are low titanium alloy, carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper and its alloys, etc. They have high plasticity and low deformation resistance, and are suitable for cold stamping processing.
