Common Materials Used in Battery Tabs

Battery tabs, often referred to as battery connecting pieces, play an integral role in connecting the cell to its external circuitry. Selecting the right material for these tabs is crucial to ensure effective electrical conductivity and resistance to corrosion.

Nickel (Ni): The most commonly used material for battery tabs. Its high conductivity and corrosion resistance make it a prime choice for a variety of batteries, especially for rechargeable ones like NiMH and Li-ion.

Copper (Cu): Chosen for its excellent conductivity. However, it’s often coated with nickel or tin to prevent corrosion.

Aluminum (Al): Primarily used in lithium-ion batteries due to its lightweight and good electrical properties. However, welding aluminum tabs can be challenging, requiring specialized equipment.

Stainless steel: This is sometimes used for its strength and resistance to corrosion but is less conductive than the other materials.
